Batik is an ancient art which uses wax and dyes to create visual magic on fabrics. It is an art appreciated all over the world.
This craft uses hot wax and cold dyes and is a wax-resist dyeing technique. It can be done only on pure cotton and pure silk as synthetic material cannot withstand hot wax. wherever the wax cracks the color seeps in giving batik its unique cracked effect.
Production begins by washing the base cloth, soaking it, and beating it with a large mallet. Patterns are sketched with pencil and redrawn using hot wax. The wax functions as a dye-resist which prevent colour absorption during the dyeing process. This creates a patterned negative when the wax is removed from the dyed cloth. Using this mechanism, artisans may create intricate coloured patterns with multiple cycles of wax application and dyeing.
Then the entire fabric is boiled in soap water till all the wax melts away. It is then washed well and ironed. At each stage when the cloth is dyed, the wax cracks, making the color seep into the design giving it a cracked effect. This is what makes batik unique. The design can be seen on both sides of the cloth also. Batik is washable.
